Nadia Comaneci, (born November 12 1961 Gheorghe Gheorghiu-Dej [now Onesti] Romania) Romanian gymnast who was the first gymnast to be awarded a perfect score of 10 points in the Olympic event. Bela Karalyi came across Comaneci at the age of six. Later, she would become the Romanian gymnastics coach. The first time she competed was at the national junior championships in which she was 13th place in the year 1969. In the year 1970, she was crowned champion. At her first international meet in an preolympics junior event for nations in the Communist bloc, she took home three gold medals. And in 1973 and 1975, she was awarded the All-around Junior Champion. In her very first competition at the senior level, Lyudmila Turkishcheva of Russia won five gold medals as well being awarded a silver. She won the American Cup in New York City in 1976 becoming the first woman to perform a reverse double salto, which is a dismount from the uneven bars parallel to each other.
